iPhone

Introduced: January 2007
Terminated: n/a

Description

The iPhone was Apple’s true entry into the world of mobile phones.  It features a 3.5” widescreen multi-touch screen that can be used to run a version of OS X.  The iPhone can fully browse web pages as well as a variety of other applications.  It had a capacity of 4 or 8Gb, and a built in 2.0 megapixel camera.

History

The iPhone, announced six months before its release, was arguably the most widely anticipated product in Apple’s history.  Building on the amazing and ongoing success of the iPod line, the iPhone promised to change the world of mobile phones.  With its sleek new design and user-friendly interface, most found that it lived up to the hype.

An iTunes compatible phone had been released with Motorola, but the non-Apple design was did not satisfy the desire for a true Apple phone, and the iPhone did.  Customers waited in line outside of Apple stores before they opened to purchase the iPhone.  Some were not pleased that purchasing the phone meant you had to become an AT&T customer, but that did not change the fact that it sold even better than Apple had predicted.

The 4Gb model was $499 and the 8Gb model was $599 when purchased as part of a two-year contract with AT&T.

Timeline

The iPhone was introduced in January 2007, but was not available for sale until June.  In September 2007, Apple eliminated the 4Gb model and dropped the price of the 8Gb model to $399.  Because of anger from early purchasers, Apple offered a $100 Apple Store Certificate to those who had bought the higher priced initial release.
