We will have some commentary right after we go to the restroom after waiting a few hours! In the meantime start commenting below. iPhone. Revolutionary? Will you buy one. I can tell you as someone who has seen (at least in Keynote form) that this device looks incredible.

It feels like Apple is releasing Me too products.
I agree. HOWEVER, they’ve done some things with the interface that are a drastic improvement over existing cell phones. It’s little niddly things that other companies COULD do right but don’t for reasons that escape me.
But, and let’s be clear, this is not a phone for the masses. It’s more or less a competitor to the Blackberry, and only a very few need or can afford what the iPhone offers.
Okay, let me be clearer.
Apple is the new Old Sony. Before Sony lost their way, when they were The Innovator in consumer electronics. Remember? Transistor radios? Trinitron TVs? Walkman? Pro video production equipment?
my problem with the iPhone is it is tied to cingular… why do that? also, why didn’t they go 3G with dual cameras, etc… Looks like i’m sticking to my beloved Nokia
It’s really nice but I’d rather just have an ipod like that. I don’t really care about the cell phone capabilities. Give me a land line any day.
I thought that the big thing that was awesome with the iPod was that it only played music… then iPod Photo came out… then iPod video… now the iPhone.
Face it, Apple is successful right now and they are bloating they’re products full of useless or “extra” features that dillute the potency of thier products.
I’m going to go buy a ZEN Micro, Not the new MicroPhoto, one of the old ones that didn’t have a color screen. Because it plays music.

According to apple.com, it COMBINES a “widescreen iPod” with a phone. It is NOT a new iPod, it’s just a bit of marketing hype to call it that. It happens to play music and it has a widescreen when held sideways. It’s also $600 for 8GB, so let’s hope that an ACTUAL widescreen iPod is in the cards for later.
Woooohooooo. Sure it’s a great device, but when will Oz see it?
Likewise the Apple TV. In Oz, it’s big selling feature - playing movies downloaded from iTMS - is useless because we don’t get any movies on iTMS.
So overall a big anti-climax because there was nothing for me. Did expect the One More Thing to be the Beatles deal.
Wonder if you can drive the iPhone with a bluetooth keyboard? Will it run desktop apps?
Is it a true PDA?
As far as I understand the iPhone is the widescreen iPod.
To reiterate Beeb, to get a Widescreen iPod, I’m expected to pay $600 for 8GB and a phone I have no need for. (I actually don’t have any wireless phone services… and I’m staying the hell away from the once and future AT&T Wireless.)
That’s a level of avarice not even I would expect from Apple, and I was prepared to see them make GPS and flash storage standard in portables and drop 17” iMacs as one commenter suggested in another article.
They’re going to come out with a non-Phone touchscreen iPod for the rest of us. They’d be too insane not to.

Specs are up there under Technology. OS X is the Operating System. The ability to run native OS X apps would be a real, REAL, big thing!
Btw, is it really a widescreen, or like the Zune is it just a bigger regular screen turned sideways?
There will be a Widescreen iPod Video (no phone) coming out soon. It will not cost $500. It will not have lots of unneeded bells and whistles. And it will have more than 8GB of storage.
As one CIA director famously said to his moron of a boss about weapons of mass destruction, “It’s a slam dunk.”
Really now, does any body seriously believe that Apple is stupid enough not to have one up their sleeves right now? they’re just spacing out their introductions to maximise the hype.
If you watch the demo online, and it’s just a demo so don’t shoot, when it turns sideways more of the web page shows up so that would lead me to beleive it’s a true widescreen when turned.
Ok, sounded a little stupid…. When it’s turned more shows up rather than increasing the resolution of existing screen capture.
I did a measurement of the aspect ratio, and it’s ~1.5, which is wider than 4x3 but well short of 16x9.
So it’s $500 for 4GB PLUS a two year contract?! I though that price was going to be partly subsidized by the two year contract.
Egads.
