What Do You Think of the iPhone?

by Hadley Stern Jan 09, 2007

We will have some commentary right after we go to the restroom after waiting a few hours! In the meantime start commenting below. iPhone. Revolutionary? Will you buy one. I can tell you as someone who has seen (at least in Keynote form) that this device looks incredible.

  • The price wasn’t clear Beeblebrox, in terms of details of signing a new contract. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it was $499 with the signing of a contract.

As for the aspect ratio it isn’t widescreen, one of the features Steve showed in wide-screen mode what that you could switch to wide-screen aspect ratio if you want,

  • According to the slide, it’s $500 PLUS a two-year contract for the 4GB model, and $600 PLUS a two-year contract for the 8GB model.

That’s a lot of motzah balls.

  • One of the man reasons why Apple pre-announed the iPhone is that they wanted to beat the FCC to the punch.

In developing the iPhone, Apple has created dynamic, programmable, wide screen “platform” based on Mac OS X. If it can control a cell phone, I’m sure they can swap the radio with a hard drive to it to create a next-generation, high-capacity iPod.

  • Very disappointing, as basically as someone with a macMini connected to a 42inch plasma, living in the UK, there was absolutely nothing for me to get excited about, why does the UK apple store even have the iTV for sale, seeing as you probably wont be able to even add quicktime plug-ins like DIVX, you can’t play downloaded (pirated) material, and ITMS UK only sells music, what’s the point.

And the iPhone, nice looking gadget but seeing as we’ll only be (possibly) seeing it in a year (who knows what Nokia/SE/Motorola will have out by then?), this MacWorld actually must go down as the most pointless in terms of actual tangible excitement, not even a new version of iPhoto to look forward to buying or anything to download!

surely it would of been better to have this iPhone announcement at a separate event? A MacWorld keynote with absolutely nothing for the Mac?

I think it would have been nice for them to balance out the high-end expensive stuff with an updated Mac mini, Macbook, or some other more accessible Mac product.

  • I’m planning to buy one…

I was looking at a P990i from Sony Ericsson, but the iPhone will cost less and do much more (assuming it actually works as advertised). Although, I was disappointed by the lack of memory card expansion and GPS.

Even so, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Palm must be sweating right now…

I wonder if Palm’s CEO has changed his tune after today’s keynote?

  • MacWorlds of recent year have had people storming Apple Stores ready to buy the goods, this year it’s oddly ambivalent as the iPhone although amazing, is nothing more than an expensive (and unavailable) niché product, and the iTV is a stripped down, less functional MacMini in essence.

Will people buy the iPhone in droves at that price point, knowing that it will be upgraded at least twice whilst they are stuck in a contract?

  • the iPhone will cost less

Will it though?  I was looking at Cingular’s available smart phones, and the most expensive model is $400.  The cheapest iPhone is $500.  Yes it does a lot, but it has the price to match.

Yeah, what stupid comments.  I don’t know why these CEOs can’t just stick to hawking their shit.

Jobs did that as well today when trashing the Zune.  There is no upside to it.  You’re either petty if you’re right or you look like an idiot if you’re wrong.

  • But don’t forget Beeble, you are getting a video iPod with this. Right now you can get a video iPod for 249. So, deduct that from the 499 price and you are left with getting a smart phone for 250. Granted it has a smaller hard drive (but it is a flash drive which is a more expensive technology.

What I think a lot of people are missing is that this doesn’t just replace a mobile phone, it also replaces a video iPod.

I expected no less from the once and future AT&T Wireless. Honestly, the day they don’t rip you off somehow is the day the world will come to an end.

To stupid executive comments, I think every single executive who thinks of himself as a celebrity does it. Gates did it at CES about the iPhone. Every time I hear Mac sites gloat about Apple’s success, they bring up Michael Dell’s old quote. I know of dozens of interviews where Jobs gratuitously slags on Microsoft. And Donald Trump does it every time he opens his mouth. It plays to their audiences…

And while you’re at it, why not deduct the price of a 12 megapixel digital camera?  Heck, that makes it FREE.

This thing is insanely great and insanely expensive.

I realize that their egos can’t help themselves, but it’s just so unclassy for a top executive.

Jobs ridiculed the Zune’s 2% marketshare after just one quarter in business (I’m amazed it’s that high, actually).  He then goes on to say that his GOAL for the iPhone is 1% marketshare after a year, and does anyone need remind him of what the Mac marketshare is after 30 years in business?

Like I said, there is no upside to it.  And the comment from Palm was particularly stupid.

  • when execs start yammering about products they are beating it is a;ways a bad move, when they snipe at products they trying to catch, maybe not…

  • I seriously think Apple is aiming to do a lot more with the iPhone, a lot more. But I’d probably wait until the second revision or see the real world battery life before giving any thoughts into purchasing this thing.
